Dynamic author, Al B. Quarles II takes us on an extremely realistic journey and illuminates the reason that pledging an African American college fraternity in the 1980's was revered as one of the toughest yet most rewarding periods known to man for pledging and hazing. This is the era that ultimately led to all of these grand organizations in “The Divine Nine” to eliminate the word “pledging” from their organizations all together. This is a coming of age story in which a rite of passage leads an extraordinary journey.
This story is an offbeat adventure with all of the makings of a thriller and a comedy, rolled up into a realistic and unforgettable look at two young black men that grow up together in suburban Philadelphia, became enthralled with the concepts and magnitude of black fraternal organizations, and then embark as college freshmen upon a historic black college campus in the mid 1980s. Amidst the parties, romance, fraternities, sororities, freshman initiation rituals, and the infancy of hip hop music, their inevitable rite of passage begins.
Let’s be clear, this book is not a spin-off of Spike Lee’s “School Daze” from the 1980's, and there is no "Big Brother Almighty" making them go “coo-coo for coco-puffs”. Big Brothers like “Big Bill”, “Black”, and “Scooter Destroyer” were true fraternal beasts. And the word “hellacious” is the only way to describe pledging in the “Bloody Triangle” during this period. Add two dashes of romance, three more dashes of comedy, a hyped HBCU campus and a good smoke. Voila!
Why are many called but few chosen? You will know soon.
*There are nine historically Black Greek letter organizations (BGLOs) that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council. These organizations are referred to as "The Divine Nine." Each of these fraternities and sororities make up the who’s who of African American society and began when the inclusion of African Americans in universities proved to be a trying time for black students in the early 1900's.

I personally grew up with the author and never realized he had this gift in him. I am a proud member of the longest fraternal order and its remarkable how we all have traveled in the same journey yet different paths. Very good reading for young college minds wondering if frat life is for them. Great job Al!Product details

Burning Sands My Brothers Keeper Volume 1 eBook Al B Quarles II Reviews
Awesome read! This book was very well written. The writers voice was so vivid and clear, I'm looking forward to more from this author. Great job!
I was given this book as a gift. I was totally blown away by the development of the characters and story. I never pledged a Fraternity while at Morehouse college ,but reading this well written book was a delight and an educational journey that all young men considering attending a HBCU should read. This author really hit his target with this story. I cant wait to pick up the story in volume 2 Burning Sand Hell to pay.Miami gives it 2 thumbs up .
I just finished Burning Sands My Brothers Keeper Volume 1 and gave it 5 stars.
Great story that takes you back to college days of the mid '80s. The characters pull you in during their journey to begin their pledging process. You will find yourself stepping back in time as you turn each page, relating to each character and their story. I finished the book definitely wanting more! Great work! Can't wait for Volume II!!!
I couldn't put this book down. I really felt like I was there with the characters. Loved all the old school references. I also liked that it has a little bit of everything from drama to comedy. Great job!
Al, I enjoyed your first book, of which I hope this is the first in this series. I finished it, and it caught me off guard since I didn't realize I was so close to the end.
It was great reading names of places in the neighborhood.
Congrats again and looking forward to the continuation.
I greatly enjoyed this book. It reads like the college version of Cooley High. The group hijinks take the reader back to freshman crushes and student dance parties in a way that is comical and nostalgic.
In life many of us embrace the moment and move on. However there are some precious few that appreciate their life experience. This is special. The author captures every nuance, every nook, every cranny of the human experience. When you listen to Trey's narrative he draws you in with the familiarity of that friend you had way back in the day. But then you listen to Omar and you are drawn in to the protaginists point of view...Simply a sense of what was, what is and what is still too come. This story is brings you back to youthful fights, rivalries, acquaintances, loves, wins loses. In short your emotions run the gambit. Thank you to the author for remembering who, what and where molded him into the man that told us this story...Cheers. Can't wait for the second book.
